BJP corporators have collected as many as 70,000 toys from well-to-do families during their public contact programme. These will be given to municipal school kids during the Kanya Kelavani programme next week.

The in-charge minister of Ahmedabad, Anandiben Patel, had written letters to BJP corporators and party workers to participate in the toy collection programme. Many corporators, however, had to face the issue of water and drainage during their visits to households.

If sources in BJP are to be believed, some corporators purchased new toys and gifted to Municipal School Board to avoid going to public. School board officials also said that some corporators were absent. On the other hand, some corporators worked enthusiastically to collect toys and also bought new toys in order to leave a good impression on the party high-command, said sources.

Rakesh Shah, city BJP chief and MLA from Ellisbridge, said that the overall response to the programme was good. "The party has not received any complaint regarding corporators not participating in the campaign," said Shah.  School board officials expect around 5,000 more toys in coming days from various NGOs. "We expected to collect around 25-30 thousand toys. Instead the number crossed around 70,000," said Lagdhir Desai, administrative officer of Municipal School Board. He said that they had distributed pamphlets in advance to create awareness about the programme.

"Giving a toy to a child will make a sentimental appeal to the mother who will remember it for a long time. It is immaterial who gifted the toy, but she will remember the face during the campaign," said sources
