Cool tips: Less of food & plenty fluid

Eating to your hearts' content can be excused in winters. But summers are not good to gorge on your favourite foods. Or so the experts say. Dr. Pragnesh Vachharajani, secretary of the Gujarat State Family Physicians` Forum and vice-president, Ahmedabad Medical Association, said, "One must avoid eating a big meal during summer. The best way to survive the rising heat is to eat light; take plenty of fluids and never over-eat. Heavy food often leads to indigestion which invites problems like gastroenteritis, especially during severe heat conditions when temperatures rise to 40 degrees and above."

Those who cannot resist a full supper may suffer from stomach aches or various types of gastro troubles, if they fail to restrain their taste buds.  During summer, food spoils faster, so physicians warn against eating at roadside eateries and small food stalls which often serve unhygienic and over-fermented food items.

"Eating out during summer is extremely dangerous as one is at risk of contracting diseases like jaundice, typhoid, and gastroenteritis," said Vachharajani, who confirmed a recent rise in these ailments in the city.

Summer is the season for fluids and not food, say experts. Dr.  Narendra Raval, president for Association of Chest Physicians of Gujarat, said, "There has to be a minimum intake of about 150 ml of fluid per hour - that is about a 3-liter during 12 hours. Be it water, juice, butter-milk, coconut water, one has to drink lots of fluids to maintain a sugar-salt balance to survive the rising heat. Those who skip a meal and gorge on fruits and fluids, remain healthier during summer."

Due to rising heat, many gorge on golas and ice-creams; hence, there is a sudden spurt in cases of throat infection and mouth ulcers, observe medicos. Another physician Dr. Raju Shah, ex-president of Indian Academy of Paediatrics, said, "Majority of ailments during the summer are connected to food, be it due to overeating or eating the wrong item." Shah advises people to remain cautious about their diet during the summer. He also said that parents should get their children vaccinated for diseases like typhoid, hepatitis-A -which are on the rise in summer.
