The Congress today hailed the Allahabad High Court order on land for the Dadri power project in Uttar Pradesh, seen as a setback for the Anil Ambani group which is promoting it.

"We welcome the decision. We have no problem with any power plant but it should get land which it requires and not extra. They should also acquire land which is non-productive (for such purposes)," AICC general secretary and in-charge of UP Affairs Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

The Allahabad High Court had yesterday quashed the UP government's notification for use of emergency powers to buy land for Anil Ambani group's Dadri power project. Singh said for any power project there was no need for 2500 acres and the land was forcibly acquired from farmers.

"Power projects should be in non-cultivable land so that farmers do not suffer. The unilateral acquisition of 2500 acres was not proper and Congress had opposed it then also," Singh said.

The Congress leader said that 20 kms away from Dadri, there are ravines of the Yamuna which is non-cultivable. "Why cannot the project come up there?" he asked.
