The Congress today welcomed the release of Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi after decades of imprisonment by the ruling junta, saying she was a symbol of "resistance, freedom and human rights".

In a statement, party spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi praised Suu Kyi for her struggle for democratic rights of the people of Myamar.

The Congress said it had fond memories of the Nobel peace prize winner's stay in India with her mother in her formative years.

The party also remarked about her father general Aung San's "immense contribution in building the new Myanmar" and "acknowledged her as a symbol of resistance, freedom and human rights".

The junta released Suu Kyi yesterday after keeping her under house arrest for almost 15 years for her pro-democracy stand.
