Alleging the ruling BJP of going soft on errant contractors who failed to finish development work on time as per the condition mentioned in the tender documents, the opposition Congress on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the saffron party of being lenient on them.

Leader of opposition in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Badruddin Shaikh asked, “Why is the civic body lenient on contractors when actually they should be levied fine worth crores of rupees?” He further alleged there seems to be a transparent corruption existing in the way the ruling party functions.”

Addressing the media, Shaikh stated that many contractors do not finish their work on time as per the conditions stated in the tender documents. Despite this, the contractors are not penalised heavily as per the penalty clause of the tender.

“Instead, the whopping penalty amount is relaxed and a meagre amount is charged as fine. For construction of BRTS route from Narol to Naroda, contractor Ideal Road Builders Private Ltd delayed the work and the penalty charge was Rs10.18 crore. But, the actual fine levied was Rs85 lakh and this was after the standing committee reduced the amount.”

He further said that the contractor who constructed the BRTS route from RTO to Pirana got a similar relaxation of penalty. He was only charged Rs40 lakh as fine instead of Rs7.84 crore.

The municipal commissioner had levied a fine of Rs34.89 lakh for delay in construction of Jamalpur flyover. The standing committee reduced the amount of penalty to only Rs1 lakh.

He further said, “A total amount of Rs27.66 crore should have been charged under penalty till now. Against this, only Rs2.36 crore has been charged and the rest Rs25.29 crore has been relaxed. This clearly indicates favouritism and corruption by the ruling party,” added Shaikh.
