The opposition Congress in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has alleged that the civic body authorities are maintaining double standards while awarding various contracts. The leader of opposition in AMC has written a letter to chief vigilance commissioner of Gujarat to inquire into the matter.

The Congress alleged that the ruling party favoured Akash Infra Project and awarded the Rs112 crore Model Road Project to it. Taking into consideration the financial capacity of the contractor, it was eligible for only one project. Still, it was given exemption from fulfilling financial bid criteria and awarded the whole project, alleged opposition leader Badruddin Shaikh in a letter written to chief vigilance commissioner of Gujarat.

Shaikh said that financial capacity was considered as the prime criteria while awarding contracts. "It clearly shows the double standards of the ruling BJP in awarding contracts to its favourite contractors," he alleged.

Moreover, the contractor roped in for Model Road Project quoted 7.22% lower rates compared to the estimated cost of the project. The deadline for the completion of the project was set as March 31. As per the tender terms and conditions, in case it fails to honour the deadline, it will charge 8% lower rates. "The contractor will work at only 0.78% as penalty for slow pace of work, while the civic body will pay it crores of rupees towards rate difference of bitumen. It means people have to pay for the fault of the contractor," said Shaikh.

He also said the contractor has been able to finish only 10-15% of the work and as the deadline is nearing, it is not likely that it will be able to honour the deadline.
