Congress today slammed the opposition for "obstruction" of Parliament proceedings saying it was not in national interest.

"Disruption and obstruction of the House which leads to its adjournment for the day is not in national or public interest," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

Referring to the issues of phone tapping and IPL controversy, he said the home minister made a statement on phone tapping while IPL was a private body and probe was on.

"What purpose does it serve to disrupt Parliament?" he asked.

Singhvi said the opposition has a right to make a demand for a JPC probe but the government too has a right to reject it or discuss it later on.

"This does not mean that you will disrupt the House. That means the opposition wants veto power...They should introspect on it," Singhvi said.

Asked whether Congress did right in disrupting proceedings of Lok Sabha when Yashwant Sinha of the BJP was speaking on the killing of security forces in Chhattisgarh, the Congress leader said a distinction has to be drawn between temporary disruption and adjournment for the entire day.

Allegations of illegal telephone tapping on political leaders disrupted Parliament with the Opposition demanding a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee and not allowing both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to function, leading to premature adjournment of the two Houses for the day.
