Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the Congress, a partner in the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal, must share equal responsibility with the senior partner in working for the people.

"We may be a minor partner, but people will not keep that in mind. They will make us equally responsible for the failure and success (of the government)," Mukherjee said at a West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) rally in Kolkata.

He said while winning the elections was "a day's work" running a government was work for "365 days multiplied by five years."

Congratulating former WBPCC president Manas Bhuniya for steering the party to victory in the Assembly elections, Mukherjee pointed out that the Congress had done better than even the CPI(M) by becoming the second largest party in the state.

"It is certainly an occasion of joy. But at the same time, people have given us a difficult responsibility of bringing about development, strengthening the state's economy, facilitating industry, creation of employment and developing health and education sectors. We have to work well so that people bless us again," the former WBPCC chief said.
