They were dressed to impress. After all, they were out to bag some important positions in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). It was D-Day for the newly elected 37 Congress corporators of the AMC as an MP from Rajasthan was in the city on Monday to decide the best of the corporators to be selected for key posts in Gujarat's biggest civic body. These posts included leader of opposition in the AMC, members in the standing committee and other 12 important committees.

The MP from Rajasthan, Narendra Budania, landed in the city at 11am and headed straight to a dharmshala at Shahpur crossroads where he met all the 37 newly elected corporators.

"He personally met every one and spoke at length on the capabilities of various corporators and who they feel should be their leader in the AMC. When we gave our opinion, he quizzed us about the reason for choosing a particular corporator for the given post," said one of the members who met Budania.

Sources said the names for all key posts will be announced before October 31. Sources said there are two names doing the rounds for the top post of leader of opposition in AMC. "If the party chooses to appoint a minority candidate , corporator from Behrampura- Badruddin Sheikh and Hasankhan Pathan from Dariyapur may get the post," said the source. The source said if the party opts for a non-Muslim corporator from Kalupur, Surendra Baxi may get the post.

Meanwhile, some other corporators said it was just an exercise to keep corporators happy and everything is already decided.
