Thirteen Congress corporators, including the leader of opposition in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Badruddin Shaikh, were detained for staging 'dharna' outside municipal commissioner IP Gautam's cabin on Tuesday.

Shaikh and his colleagues were protesting against inefficiency of the AMC administration in providing basic needs in Behrampura ward.

The Congress, on the one hand, has termed the arrest as 'murder of democracy'; on the other hand, the civic authorities have termed it as a violation of model code of conduct.

Shaikh and his colleagues Shakil Ahmed and Kamla Chavda along with other Congress corporators, started shouting slogans outside the commissioner's office on Tuesday noon. They were detained by the police and taken to Shahibaug Police Stadium.

Shaikh has been admitted to VS Hospital following health problems.

"The Congress corporators from Behrampura ward had intimated the civic body administration, on February 9, about their decision to go on hunger strike on February 15, still they (administration) used police to curb their voices," said Badruddin Shaikh in a statement.

He also charged the administration of partiality in development of the city.

On the other hand, the AMC administration has termed Shaikh's gesture as violation of model code of conduct. "It is very strange that the leader of opposition, who complained to the election commission in New Delhi about implementation of model code of conduct, has violated the same," said the statement issued by AMC.

The civic body administration has stated that instead of applying for drainage connections, people in Behrampura and Danilimda have illegally joined the drainage lines into storm water lines and the issue has been wrongfully raised for serving political motive.

It also said that the civic body spent Rs19.08 crore and Rs20.57 crore in last five years in Behrampura and Danilimda wards respectively for providing basic amenities, which was Rs4.03 crore and Rs9.43 crore respectively more than that spent from 2000-2005.

Meanwhile, Shaikh has announced a public rally on February 25 and also will file a public interest litigation in the Gujarat high court on issues faced by people in Behrampura ward.
