Hundreds of Congressmen defied UP chief minister Mayawati’s prohibitory orders to rally against alleged deterioration of law and order in the state. The Congress workers led by state party chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi and other senior leaders fought pitched battles with the police.

They were caned and later detained for defying prohibitory orders as they tried to march towards the state assembly building.
After the meeting, the party workers started marching towards the Vidhan Bhawan defying prohibitory orders, but they were intercepted by the police.

“This is a coward government which has been violating law itself. We will continue to protest against the atrocities against women and the deteriorating law and order situation,” Joshi said as she was taken away by the police along with scores of other party workers. “We have violated Section 144. If the government has courage, let them arrest us and send us to jail,” she said.

The Congress, along with other opposition parties, has mounted an attack on the Mayawati regime over the recent spate of rapes. The party is also demanding a CBI inquiry into the mysterious death of deputy CMO Dr YS Sachan, prime accused in the murder of two CMOs, in Lucknow jail.

“Women and girls are not safe in Uttar Pradesh. Rape cases are being reported almost every day,” Joshi said while addressing a meeting of party workers.

The Congress has lambasted the Mayawati regime for denying permission for the march saying it reflected the “fascist” style of functioning of the Mayawati government.

“This protest is a way of attracting the attention of the government against the utter lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh. There is total jungle-raj in UP. Everyday girls and women are being raped and killed. There are high-profile murders in jails. The entire law and order machinery has collapsed,” Joshi said.

“Mayawati is openly protecting criminals. The government is apathetic to the people. She is not bothered and is misusing the police and administration to muzzle the voice of the people,” she said.

“Through this ‘Nyaya march’, we are demanding justice. We want a CBI inquiry into the killing of Dr Sachan and the other two CMOs’ murders. We want a CBI inquiry into the rape and murder cases. We want a judicial inquiry into the Bhatta Parsaul events,” the UP Congress chief added.

Meanwhile, Mayawati called a meeting of top police and administrative officials on Monday and gave out strict instructions regarding crime control. She warned officials that any laxity on their part would invite the strictest punishment.
