The Congress sought an explanation from party MP Naveen Jindal on Wednesday over his controversial remarks favouring the infamous khap panchayats of Haryana.

“I have sought an explanation from him (Jindal),” AICC general secretary in-charge of Haryana Prithviraj Chavan said when asked if the party had acted against the Kurukshetra MP for showering praise on the caste councils of Haryana.

Khap panchayats have been charged with acting as extra-constitutional bodies and authorising honour killings.

Jindal said he hadn’t yet received any communication from Chavan to explain his remarks. “I have already clarified my position to the in-charge general secretary (Chavan) and explained to him that I do not and will not support any act of the khap panchayats in contravention of the law of the land. Instead, I have asked them to fight against social ills like female foeticide and dowry,” he told DNA.

Explaining why he accepted to meet khap representatives despite the party’s clear reservations Jindal said, “I met them and agreed to pass on a memorandum of their demands to the chief minister (Bhoopinder Singh Hooda). But I didn’t make any recommendation on whether demands made by khaps should or shouldn’t be accepted. They are members of my constituency and as their elected MP I am dutybound to grant them an audience.”

Jindal had on Sunday, drawn flak from his party seniors for praising works of caste councils at a khap mahapanchayat organised in Kaithal, Haryana. The young MP, also a leading industrialist, had surprised his party colleagues by reportedly extending support to khap representatives over their demand to amend the Hindu Marriage Act and prohibit marriages within the same gotras.

The Congress had distanced itself from Jindal’s remarks saying, “Individual persons or MPs may have their own opinion. That doesn’t mean there is a change in Congress’ stance.”
