The youth Congress has started 'Aam aadmi ka sipahi' campaign to spread awareness among the common people about the various programmes initiated by the UPA government for their welfare, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is on a day-long visit to the city, said.
The campaign has started from Punjab. The party will spread it to the rest of the country, Gandhi said addressing APCC office bearers at Rajiv Bhavan, the Congress headquarters here.
Rahul, who is in-charge of both the NSUI and the youth Congress, said he will take forward both the party wings throughout the country to work for the common people.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi addressed a NSUI meeting.
The media was, however, not allowed into the venue of the NSUI meeting, while only the electronic media was permitted to cover the Rajiv Bhavan meeting.
An APCC spokesman said the Special Protection Force (SPG) accompanying Rahul did not allow journalists to cover the NSUI meeting, while the print media was left out in the party workers meeting due to "constraint of space in the Rajiv Bhavan".
Visiting Assam for the first time after the Lok Sabha polls, Gandhi thanked chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita for the party's win in the state.
The Congress leader said the party has also launched a membership drive to recruit 20 lakh youths across the country to be sent to remote areas and work for villagers and poor.
The members will go to the villages under the 'aam aadmi ka sipahi' programme "to inform people there about government programmes such as NREGA and others", he said.
We are enrolling members "using technically sophisticated method so that there was no bogus member and issued photo identity cards to all of them. There is three and half lakh membership in Punjab", Gandhi informed.
