A youth was killed and another seriously injured in a communal clash that  took place following an incident of eve teasing in Dudheshwar area near the newly constructed Dadhichi Rishi bridge.

The police maintained that there was no communal tension in the area but relatives of the deceased told DNA that the tension that followed the eve-teasing incident led to the youth's death. The police have also detained some people from the minority community.

The incident happened when two people travelling on a bike entered the communally charged minority area in Dudheswar. Communal tension had ensued following an incident of eve teasing.

According to a complaint filed at Madhavpura police station, Ravi Shrimali and his friend Chirag Shrimali were attacked and injured by a group of Muslims on Vadaj-Dudheshwasr bridge.
Ravi, 18, a resident of Ukara ni Pol, Shahpur, succumbed to his injuries in
the wee hours of Monday
at Civil hospital where he and Chirag were admitted after the assault.
Complainant Chirag Shrimali, 17, a resident of Vadvadi Pol, Shahpur, said that a group of around 15 men from the minority community stopped them on the newly inaugurated bridge at around 10:30pm when they were returning from an ice candy parlour in Vadaj.

"They asked us if we were Hindus. When we said yes they attacked us with knives, sickle and other weapons," Chirag stated in his complaint.

The police soon reached the spot while the attackers fled the spot. The two youth were admitted to Civil hospital where Ravi died at 5:00am on Monday. However, city police officials rejected the claim that a group of men from the minority community was responsible for Ravi's murder.

Satish Sharma, joint commissioner of police (JCP) Sector-I, said that a group was behind the murder.

"Primary investigations have revealed that the murder was not communally motivated. A Hindu group is responsible for it," Sharma said.

Nonetheless, Ravi's elder brother Satish Shrimali insisted that a group from the other community had murdered his brother and injured Chirag.

Police sources said that earlier groups from two communities gathered at the opposite ends of Vadaj-Dudheshwar bridge after a few youth from the minority community eve teased a Hindu girl who was crossing the bridge on Sunday night.

Sensing trouble, police even blocked the bridge for traffic. "However, Ravi and Chirag ignored the tense situation and ventured to cross the bridge. Subsequently, they were attacked by men from the minority community gathered at the Dudheshwar end," the sources added.

Satish Shrimali also confirmed the eve teasing incident but clarified that Ravi and Chirag had nothing to do with it.  Police sources further said that no complaint was filed in connection with the eve-teasing incident. Madhavpura police have registered a case of murder and are investigating the matter.
