The government has asked the army to be on alert in view of the Commonwealth Games. The alert was sounded after several nations raised security concerns following the September 19 Jama Masjid shooting in which two Taiwanese tourists were injured.

An officer told DNA, “The army is always prepared and alert. The Games will be secured first by Delhi Police, paramilitary and national security guard, if need be. The [Delhi-based 60] brigade is the fourth rung of the security cover and has asked to be mentally prepared in case of an emergency.”

The 60 brigade, headed by Brig Sundar Singh of Jat Regiment, has been asked to keep quick-reaction teams ready. The Ghatak platoons of the Meerut-based 22 division, which are trained in specialised warfare, have arrived in Delhi. The 60 brigade is part of the 22 division.

Officers of the brigade have been asked to go through maps of Games venues. A source, however, said no special training or drill was being conducted for the battalions in the brigade and no leaves were being cancelled.

To tackle a potential chemical biological radio and nuclear (CBRN) threat during the Games, the army has constituted a quick-reaction mobile team (QRMT) comprising an NBC platoon, a medical team and an infantry team of about 70-80 personnel.

The six battalions under the 60 and 35 brigades based in Delhi have undergone CBRN training and have had a joint training capsule with Delhi Police. An officer said, “It is Delhi Police who are solely responsible and the army has been put on standby.”

The army’s assistance has been sought during flag-hoisting at the opening and closing ceremonies  and providing accommodation for rehearsals.
