Heavy rains lashed entire South Gujarat region, with Surat, Navsari, Valsad and other places receiving heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours. 

According to officials, an average of four to five inches of rainfall was received in all talukas in the period. Strong bout of rains over the last few days has wiped out the deficit caused due to delayed arrival of rain in the region, which is good news for farmers.

Officials said that not much rain was received in Surat city during the night, but the heavens opened up at daybreak. They said that almost seven inch rainfall was received in Surat between 6 am and 2 pm.

The heavy downpour led to water-logging in many areas throwing life out of gear. According to officials, Navsari Bazaar, Nanpura, Chowk Bazaar, Ghoddod Road, Piplod, Katargam, Varachha, Adajan, Surat-Dumas road, Ring Road, were flooded due to incessant rains.
The rain waters flooded many residences in low-lying areas and also entered commercial premises at different places. The roads across the city turned into potholes because of the downpour, also exposing the fact that poor construction of roads is not limited to any particular zone.

Athwalines, Citylight, Ghoddod road, Varachha, Amroli, among areas that were flooded. Various railway underpasses connecting different areas with the city were flooded and closed for several hours, causing inconvenience to many citizens. Power supply was disrupted in many areas in the city.

Schools and other educational institutions also remained closed for the day considering the heavy rainfall and forecast of more rains. Bardoli and Olpad talukas received around 5.5 inch while Palsana received more than four inch. Two persons were injured after a tree fell on them in Bardoli.

In Dangs district, Ahwa received two inch rainfall while Waghai received one inch. According to officials, Dangs has received less than 15% of the average annual rainfall in the current season so far. "Inadequate rain so far is a worrying sign for farmers in Dangs as they are totally dependent on rains for irrigation," an official of Information Bureau in Dangs, said.
