Chidambaram visits Leh to assess rehabilitation work

Home minister P Chidambaram today interacted with victims in the cloudburst-ravaged areas of Leh to assess the ongoing rehabilitation work in the area.
 
Chidambaram, who is on a two-day visit to the state, went to Puga and Saboo villages and talked with the victims to take stock of the steps taken to rehabilitate them.
 
The Home minister visited the worst-hit Choglamsar and inspected the prefabricated homes built for flood victims.
 
Expressing satisfaction over the rehabilitation efforts underway, he asked DGP Kuldeep Khoda if similar prefabricated shelters could also be built for the police and army jawans.
 
The home minister then went to the ITBP campus to inaugurate a newly built complex and have an interaction with the jawans.
 
Chidambaram also visited the Hot Springs in Ladakh region to pay tribute to 10 CRPF jawans, who laid down their lives while repulsing the Chinese incursion in 1959.
 
Accompanied by senior officials from his ministry and the state government, the Home Minister visited the scene of the battle that took place near the Indo-Chinese border on October 21, 1959, official sources said.
 
The CRPF personnel, who were on deputation to ITBP, fought valiantly to repulse the Chinese attack and in the process laid down their lives.
 
Chidambaram later had lunch with the troops of ITBP at a camp in the border district, the sources said.
 
The home minister will stay at Leh tonight and fly to Kargil tomorrow.
 
He is also scheduled to visit Baramulla district in north Kashmir and Srinagar tomorrow before returning to New Delhi.
