Maoist guerrillas have prepared hit-list of 22 top leaders and bureaucrats to be eliminated, according to central intelligence agencies. Union home minister P Chidambaram, who has advocated a strong line in fighting the Maoists, is at the top of the list.

A cautious union home ministry has alerted the different state governments to undertake the utmost precautions to ensure the safety of persons so named, who are among India’s most important persons.

Apart from Chidambaram, the other very important persons (VIP) that figure in the Maoists hit-list, according to the intelligence agencies, are West Bengal governor MK Narayanan, Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) director general Vikram Srivastava, among others.

Sources said that West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s name also figures on the list, alongside a few senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

As per the intelligence inputs, the hit-list was prepared last week during a meeting last week at a secret location in the jungles of Jharkhand and which was attended by over 500 top Maoist leaders. The intelligence report suggested that the hit-list was apparently prepared to avenge the death of a top Maoist leader, Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, who was killed in an encounter with the police.

Meanwhile, sources from West Bengal’s intelligence branch say Maoists have announced a counter-award policy to stop villagers from giving out information about Maoist leaders to the state government. Sources also said that Maoists are wooing tribal youths with cash rewards to kill people whom they want
to eliminate.
