Charges in the multiple blasts that rocked the city in July 2008, killing 56 persons and injuring more than 150, were framed at the designated court of sessions judge Bela Trivedi on Monday. The court has framed charges against 95 persons out of which 33 have been declared absconding, while two persons Atif alias Basar and Mohammed Sajid have been declared dead.

The court has charged all the persons of conspiracy amounting to criminal conspiracy, and also a plot to kill chief minister Narendra Modi.

The charges were framed on the basis of 66 chargesheets - including 22 main and the remaining supplementaries filed against the accused by crime branch.

The charges levelled against the accused include that they had plotted to take revenge for post-Godhra riots in 2002, in which a large number of Muslims were killed and for this, they had also arranged various camps at Halol and Waghmon in Kerala.

Most of the accused were associated with SIMI even though they knew that the organisation was banned. Gujarat police have attributed the entire blasts conspiracy in Ahmedabad and Surat to the Indian Mujahideen (IM), a wing of SIMI and Harkat-ul-Jehadi-Islami (HUJI).

To hatch the plan they had also held separate meetings at various places in Ahmedabad, including at Al-Mohammadi Society, Vatva, a place near Seema Communication and even at few places at Bharuch.

The trial in Ahmedabad blasts is going on at Sabarmati central jail and the state government has appointed four special PPs — HM Dhruv, Mitesh Amin, Sudhir Brahmbhatt and Amit Patel for this.

The accused have been charged under sections 121(A), 124(A), 302, 307, 326, 435, 436 of IPC and other sections under Unlawful Assembly Act and Explosives Substance Act.

For executing their plans the accused had stolen cars from Mumbai, including one Maruti 800 and two WagonRs, and they had tampered the number plates.

Gujarat police have arrested a total of 62 people, and there are more than 33 persons, including Abdul Subhan alias Tauqeer, Amir Raza Khan, Iqbal and Riyaz Bhatkal, who are still absconding.
