Chains worth Rs1.16 crore snatched in Ahmedabad in 2011

According to police data, Ahmedabad city is not safe for women. The reason for this is the rising number of cases of chain snatching in the city. Women are most affected by chain snatching.

Police data, for the period 31-01-2011 to 31-12-2011, shows that 410 women have been victims of chain snatching. The data finds that chain snatching incidents occurred in 34 of Ahmedabad's 38 police stations. This means there are 4 police stations in which not a single record of chain snatching is recorded.

Interestingly, Naroda, known as the industrial hub of the city, recorded the highest number of chain snatching cases. 50 women were victims of chain snatching in this area. During this period, the value of the gold chains amounted to Rs.1,16,42,741. 724 persons were accused of chain snatching, out of which 226 were caught and 498 are still at large.

Some members of the Irani Gang, known for their chain snatching members from Mumbai, have been caught by the Ahmedabad police, but many are yet to be arrested.

Shahpur, Dariapur, Ranip and Vatva G.I.D.C were the only 4 police stations in which there was not a single case of chain snatching. Shahpur and Dariapur had no cases while in Gomtipur and Kalupur only 1 and 2 cases of chain snatching were recorded, respectively.

Regarded as one of the most areas in the city, Naranpura recorded 35 cases of chain snatching while Ellisbridge had 30. Ghatlodia and Chandkheda recorded 27 cases of chain snatching each.

Vastrapur and Satellite, which are also swanky areas of the city, recorded 24 cases each. Odhav, which is most affected by the Fracture Gang, recorded 21 cases of chain snatching.

Maninagar, from where chief minister Narendra Modi won the election, recorded 15 cases and Isanpur was just behind with 14.

Ajay Tomar, JCP, says, "The highest number of chain snatching incidents occur in areas which are densely populated. But still the police have kept a control on the number of cases and have created awareness in the public in this regard."
