To curb spiralling prices of essential commodities, the Centre would soon release more food stock to the Delhi  government, chief minister Sheila Dikshit said today.

"The Centre has assured us provision of sufficient stock that is needed to bring down the prices of basic items," Dikshit told PTI after a meeting with agriculture minister Sharad Pawar here.

She said, "We would work out how much (food stock) we would need and inform the Centre. This will happen within the next one or two days."

"In the last few days the prices of essential items have come down mainly because the traders are now aware that the National Agricultural and Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) is also entering in the market in a big way.

"... and our pulses and wheat flour associations are also coming forward," the chief minister added.

NAFED has collaborated with the Delhi government to supply arhar dal, moong, urad, parimal rice and edible oil 30% cheaper than the market rate from February 5 to arrest spiralling prices.

The chief minister also mentioned about the wheat flour being sent to every constituency in the city in the past few days, which has brought down the prices.

The Delhi chief minister said "We have decided that besides three trucks of wheat flour (to various constituencies in Delhi), we will also send a truck of pulses also and this will be in addition to what is being sold through Mother Dairy and the Kendriya Bhandars (central warehouses)."

After cracking down on wholesale hoarders, the government has decided to raid the retail outlets too to unearth illegal storage of food items that has an impact on prices.

"Our vigilance department has in the last few days conducted raids at several places and has also registered cases against the offenders. Soon, random raids will also be conducted at retail outlets in the main markets," Dikshit said.
