Reacting to growing concerns over coastal security along the 1600-km coastline of Gujarat, the central government has approved the set up of seven radar stations. Replying to a question raised by Ramsinh Ratwa in the Lok Sabha, defense minister AK Antony revealed his plans of enhancing security along the state's coast.

The Centre has given approval for setting up seven radar stations along Gujarat's coast as well as for a coast guard station at Pipavav, Antony told the Lok Sabha on Monday. Coastal security has been one of the prime concerns of the state and the central governments ever since 26/11, wherein terrorists used the Gujarat coastline to infiltrate the country and then went on to attack Mumbai. Antony replied in written to Ratwa's question in the House.

Gujarat has been an important coastal area in terms of national security. Chief minister Narendra Modi had earlier shown concerns about security along the state's coast and said that it had to be enhanced.

On the proposal for setting up coast guard stations along the Gujarat coastline, Antony said, "There are seven coast guard stations in Gujarat located at Gandhinagar, Porbandar, Okha, Jakhau, Vadinar, Mundra and Veraval. There is an air enclave at Porbandar."

Coast Guard stations are set up at a particular location after taking into account the threat perception, vulnerability gap analysis and presence of other stations in the vicinity, he said.

A regional headquarters (north-west) at Gandhinagar has also been established in the state to monitor coastal security for Gujarat. Under Phase-I of the Centrally-sponsored Coastal Security Scheme, ten coastal police stations have been established and twelve additional coastal police stations have been sanctioned under Phase-II, he said.
