The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has written a letter to all district magistrates and commissioners of police of the state asking for details about the American revolver which the ATS had recovered from Sohrabuddin.

The revolver was found after his alleged encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The CBI is probing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case of 2005. According to an Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) report, Sohrabbudin, who was on his motorcycle, fired from his pistol when he saw ATS officials near Vishala Circle. In retaliation, the ATS officials fired at him and he was killed in the incident.

The ATS officials, in the FIR registered in the case, had even filed a case under section 307 of IPC against Sohrabuddin. The ATS officials had also recovered a .302 bore American revolver with the serial number, 300423.

CBI sources said they have written a letter to all district magistrates and commissioners of police of the state to find out in whose name the revolver is registered. As per rules, all those who possess a gun or revolver have to get a licence from the district magistrate or concerned commissioner of police. They also have to renew their licence at regular intervals.

The CBI's letters assume importance as the agency has been directed by the Supreme Court to complete the investigation in the case within six months.

However, as per the case being investigated by state CID (Crime), Sohrabuddin was picked from Sangli on the Maharashtra-Andhra Pradesh border and he was later killed on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

There is no mention of a recovery of pistol from him.
Sheikh was allegedly killed by the Gujarat cops with the help of Andhra Pradesh police. The police had at that time claimed that he was on a mission to kill chief minister Narendra Modi in November 2005.

Suspended DIG DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian, Abhay Chudasama (all three Gujarat cadre IPS officers) besides Dinesh MN (Rajasthan cadre IPS officer), are the main accused in the fake encounter case.
