In a dramatic turn, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh on Monday created a flutter in a Delhi court by naming Congress leader Ahmed Patel as the source of the money used in the 2008 cash for vote scam as the court extends his interim bail till September 27.

Jethmalani’s argument over Singh’s regular bail was a complete u-turn from his earlier stance.

Earlier he said that the money had come from BJP since LK Advani had said that his party had conducted a sting operation.
Jethmalani told special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal that the bribe was paid at the Le Meridien Hotel in Delhi.

“The place of receipt of the bribe was not Amar Singh’s home, but the hotel. The person who paid the bribe was not Amar Singh but obviously Ahmad Patel, an MP and a very influential member of the party whose government was to be saved,” said Jethmalani. Terming Patel as the bribe giver, Jethmalani said, “I am not suggesting that Patel, on this piece of evidence, should be convicted but if you are influencing MPs of other parties on behalf of your party, then you are the bribe giver.”

He said he was not trying to blame the Congress party but wanted to say that many influential members of the party were responsible for the money trail.

Pressing for Amar Singh’s bail, Jethmalani said the statement of accused in the case cannot be treated as evidence.
“Statement of the accused is technically no evidence. Nowhere throughout the camera operation can one find the face or even the voice of Amar Singh,” Jethmalani said. However, the Congress party dismissed these as serial allegations.

“Today he has said this, tomorrow he will say something else. The fact is that the Congress had taken a considered decision to go for the vote of confidence at that time, and there was no uncertainty about the outcome,” said party spokesperson Renuka Chaudhary while asserting that there was no need to ‘buy MPs’.”

While extending Singh’s interim bail which was to expire on Monday, the court also asked BJP leader LK Advani’s former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni, a co-accused in the case, to appear before it on September 27 without fail.
