Cases were registered against as many as 704 police personnel in two years - roughly one a day - the state government said on Friday. The government said it had registered cases and taken legal steps against the booked cops, who were found to be involved in different criminal activities.

In a written reply to the state assembly, minister of state for home, Praful Patel, said that cases had been registered against 704 police personnel, including 15 police sub inspectors (PSIs), 221 assistant sub inspectors (ASIs)/head constables and 468 constables, between June 2008 and May 2010.

The minister informed the House that the cops were found to be involved in various criminal activities and that legal action had been taken against them under various provisions of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prohibition Act.

Sixty-six police personnel each in Ahmedabad and Junagadh were booked for crimes during this period, the highest in the state. They were followed by Kheda, where cases were registered against 46 policemen and Gandhinagar with cases against 44 cops. According to the government figures, also high on the list were Vadodara Rural where cases were registered against 39 cops, Vadodara City with 38 cases, Rajkot City with 36, Rajkot Rural with 35 and Surat City with 35 such instances.

Bharuch and Godhra, with cases against 27 police personnel each, and Sabarkantha with 24 booked cops, also figured high on the list. With cases against only three police personnel, Dangs and Narmada registered the lowest number of such instances in the last two years. Ahmedabad Rural, Amreli and Tapi registered five instances of cases against cops, while the number was seven each in Surat Rural and Navsari.
