It was a day that was looked forward to with fear and excitement alike, and ended on a note of slight disappointment. The much-awaited CA (final) and Common Proficiency Test (CPT) results were announced on Monday, and Ahmedabad students met with more or less the same fate as students across the country.

4.57% students cleared the CA final exams held in
May 2010 and 27.55% students cleared the CPT exam held in June 2010, from across the country.

There has been a tremendous fall in results this attempt, as compared to the previous one. But Ahmedabad still manages to be ahead of India's average, with 5.83% students of CA final (old as well as new course) and 32.76% students of CPT passing from Ahmedabad.

From among the CA final students, Archit Shah who appeared for the exam in old course stood 3rd at the all-India level, while Tejas Rupani stood 20th. In the CPT course, Bhagya Shah stood 7th and Rahul Agarwal stood 9th at the all-India level.

Upon declaration of the results, Jainik Vakil, vice-chairman of the Ahmedabad branch of Institute of Chartered Accountant of India (ICAI), said, "With the changing times, it is becoming increasingly important for the students to have practical knowledge. They should thus take their studies and articleships very seriously. This will give them knowledge of their subject, but of the practical world as well."

Agreeing with Vakil is Parag Raval, regional council member at Western India Regional Council, who said, "With tremendous changes expected in the Direct Tax Code, Company Law Bill and others in the coming five years, students are advised to take their exams seriously. A situation of 'learn, unlearn and relearn' can be created if the students fail to clear."

With the exams getting tougher and increasingly application-oriented, this has been one of the toughest results till date. CA coaching classes were also disappointed by the results. Hitesh Shah, director of Navkar Institute, said, "The results are really disappointing with just 17 ranks at the all-India level. The only thing that students need keep in mind is that they have to take their studies very seriously. There are no shortcuts to success."

Echoing Shah's view, Milan Shah, director of Knowledge Academy, said, "Students need to be very clear with their concepts, now that the exams are becoming more application-based. They should know that plain theoretical knowledge will not help."
