Road journeys will be costlier for commuters in UP as state-run Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has hiked its fares by around 21%.

The fare hike came into effect from midnight following approval from the state transport authority (STA) yesterday, a senior UPSRTC official said here today.

On an average 21% hike in inter-city and intra-city bus fares, excluding suburban bus service, had been made, he said.

The UP Cabinet had approved the Corporation's long-pending proposal for the fare hike last week.

The STA met here yesterday to discuss the government notification on the fare increase and directed the UPSRTC to go ahead with the hike from the date it wanted.

The officials, however, clarified that there has been no fare increase in 'Janata' buses for the benefit of villagers, who mostly travelled in them.
