A day after DNA reported about the threat posed to commuters by the dozens of cave-ins on city roads, two AMTS employee were killed in an accident near Mahalaxmi crossroads early on Wednesday. A speeding state transport (ST) bus crashed headlong into a motorcycle coming from the other side.
Eyewitnesses said the accident had occurred because the road at the site had become narrow due to a cave-in. The Ellisbridge police have lodged a case against the absconding bus driver.
The deceased have been identified as Amir Khan Pathan (54) and Iqbal Shah, both residents of Juhapura in Ahmedabad.
The sources said that Pathan and Shah were returning home after work. They used to work in the Jamalpur workshop of the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS).
"The road near Ankur School has turned into a single lane because of a cave-in," a source in the police said. "The ST bus was travelling on the Bavla-Bagodara route while Pathan and Shah were going from Paldi to Vasna. The bus crashed into their bike at around 5 am on Wednesday." The two victims were taken to VS Hospital where the doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the driver of the ST bus had fled from the scene of accident.
