West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and CPI(M) state secretary and Left Front chairman Biman Bose have been playing a different role for the past few days. It’s the role is of being “tough task masters”. They are cautioning the laid-back state ministers to stick to deadlines in completing projects related to their departments.

Highly placed Left Front sources told DNA that during the last 15 days, both Bhattacharjee and Bose have individually summoned 10 state ministers and have cautioned them to expedite the pace of work of their respective departments. These 10 state ministers, according to sources, are in addition to 40 top-level state leaders, against who there are complaints of corruption, arrogance and negligence towards streamlining organisational network.

Sources further said that summoning such laid-back state ministers and cautioning them about their slow pace of work is a part of the internal rectification drive undertaken by the party.

“The chief minister and the Left Front chairman are of the opinion not just complaints of arrogance and corruption, but the laid-back attitude of a section of the ministers has also been responsible for erosion of mass support in the recent times. So both the leaders consciously decided to include the conduct of ministers within the purview of the rectification drive, even if there are no direct complaints of corruption against them,” a senior state committee leader said.

Incidentally, all the ten state ministers who were summoned or cautioned during the last fortnight belonged to CPI(M). “The party being the leader of the Left Front in West Bengal, its responsibility is more and so we have started with our ministers. In due course of time, laid-back ministers from other front constituents will also be summoned,” the state committee leader said.

Political analysts feel that by summoning these ministers, Bhattacharjee and Bose intend to send out very a strong message to the party’s rank and file.
