Residents of Kawant taluka in Vadodara district attacked the local police station on Friday afternoon after a Border Security Force trooper died in custody.

The police had to fire tear-gas shells to bring the situation under control. A first information report has been lodged against the sub-inspector at the police station while the district collector and the district superintendent of police have promised necessary action.

According to a source, the daughter of Nuriya Rathwa, a resident of Hamirpura village of Kawant and a BSF trooper, recently eloped with a young man from the same village. Rathwa lodged a police complaint and the case was being investigated by constable Jadubhai.

The girl expressed her desire to stay with the man she had eloped with. At the end of the police investigation, the couple got married in court.

This angered Rathwa and his wife. On Friday, the Rathwas went to the police station and asked Jadubhai why he had not been given custody of his daughter. The argument became heated and Rathwa allegedly attacked the constable with an axe, striking him on the head.

Police arrested Rathwa and his wife and booked them for attempt to murder. Rathwa's attack on Jadubhai infuriated the police, and the sub-inspector and other personnel beat up Rathwa severely at the police station.

Rathwa died of the beating in the police custody. On hearing of this, residents of Hamirpura and Kawant rushed to the spot in large numbers and attacked the police station. They damaged doors, broke windows, and pelted stones at the police personnel. The police had to fire tear-gas shells to control the mob.

Superintendent of police BS Jebaliya and other senior officers rushed to the police station. Jebaliya told DNA: "A case of murder has been registered against PSI RS Chauhan and nine other police officers. We will take strict action in this regard."

Vadodara collector Vijay Nehra said, "I have ordered [the police] to file the inquest in the presence of Chhota Udepur SDM [sub-divisional magistrate] Ravi Kumar at the crime spot. Not only that, Nuriyabhai's body has been brought to the SSG Hospital at Vadodara where a panel post-mortem will be conducted.

"All those who want to lodge complaints against the police officers can come forward. I have asked the officers to lodge each and every complaint by every person willing to complain."
