BSF asks Bangladesh Rifles not to violate status quo

The BSF today asked BDR not to violate the status quo along the international border, a day after Bangladeshis brought in trucks into the Indian territory at Pyrdiwah, close to Muktapur where the BDR resorted to firing four times in past month.

"We have spotted some dump trucks in the Pyrdiwah area yesterday where some Bangladeshis are collecting stones and digging the Pyang river. We have asked the BDR not to use our territory," BSF (Assam and Meghalaya frontier) IG Prithivi Raj said, adding that the situation there was not 'conducive'.

The area is close to Muktapur where the BDR resorted to unprovoked firing four times since last month, triggering tension in the area and forcing residents to abandon their homes.

Claiming that both the border forces were maintaining cordial relationship, the IG, however, blamed a commander of the BDR for not cooperating and creating undue conflicts.

"This particular commandant of BDR’s 21 battalion is not cooperating with us. All the border problems are occurring in his area of operation. We have apprised the BDR higher-ups about the matter," Raj said.

Revealing that he has been receiving reports about BDR build-up across the border, the IG said, "we hope they do not use force against India."

The top BSF official stressed that both the BSF and BDR should maintain restraint along the border to ensure peace and tranquility.
