You will have to pay more to travel by BRTS. Well not much but a bit more that AMTS fares. For Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd, (AJL) which is a special purpose vehicle of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to implement the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), will charge a fare that is 1.5 times higher than the one charged by Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS).

AJL has fixed the minimum fare at Rs2, while the fare from RTO to Chandranagar will be Rs11.  “The fare decided by the company is fair enough taking into consideration the project cost as well as the facility and comfort level provided while commuting in the bus,” said Surendra Baxi, leader of opposition in AMC, who is also one of the directors on the AJL board. AJL’s pricing formula will not have any impact on the daily commuters.  Though the commuters will have to pay higher fare, they have no reservation as they are getting better facilities.

“I have been using BRTS for one-and-a-half month. I prefer BRTS buses because of higher frequency and speed,” said Vijay Bhunotar, a commuter, adding that AMTS buses are not regular.

The company has also fixed the parking rates on the BRTS route from RTO to Chandranagar.  In the first phase, from RTO to Pirana, nine parking stretches will be constructed.  They  will accommodate around 679 auto rickshaws, 425 four wheelers and 3624 two-wheelers.

Surprisingly, the autorickshaws will get free parking on the BRTS route.  The construction work of the first phase of the project will be completed very soon.  The company will place an order for around 20 air-conditioned buses and around 250 feeder buses will also be put on the BRTS route by December end.

Moreover, the company has also floated a tender to buy 150 more buses.  According to sources, AJL has given an order to Tata Motors to supply the buses even though neither AMTS nor the State Transport are willing to buy diesel buses from the company because of high failure rate. Sources said the order is being placed against the will of the administrative wing under alleged pressure from the state government.

“The company has given an order to Tata Motors as the company satisfies technical qualifications and was the first lowest bidder,” said Asit Vora, chairman of AMC’s standing committee and one of the board of directors on AJL board.
