Neighbours of Valji Bhudarmal Morakhia, whose body was found inside a box near Asarwa bridge on Friday, and other residents of Borsalli Apartment in Khanpur staged a rally on Sunday. They were protesting against the lethargic attitude shown by the Shahpur police in filing a missing complaint for Morakhia, who had been missing since Thursday morning.

More than 300 residents went to the Shahpur police station on Sunday afternoon to give a memorandum to the police inspector, who was, incidentally, not present at that time. According to the residents, if the police had taken Morakhia's disappearance seriously, he could have been saved. But the police refused to register a complaint on Thursday, the residents alleged.

"When we approached the Shahpur police, they ordered us to go to Kalupur police station, because Morakhia's shop is in Ratanpol. However, Kalupur police told us to go to Shahpur," said Rajesh Brahmbhatt, secretary of Borsalli Apartment.

However, because the police inspector of Shahpur police is on leave since the few days, the residents could not meet any of the top officials.

"Shahpur police cannot escape by saying that the body was found in the limits of Shahibaug. I want them to explore every angle in the death of Morakhia," said Brahmbhatt, who has also warned that the residents will meet police commissioner and home minister, if the case is not solved within two days' time.

Police, on Friday, discovered Morakhia's body packed in a box at around 9.30 am from Asarwa bridge. Morakhia, 46, was working in a garment shop that is owned by his elder brother in Ratanpol.

After learning about the incident, family members of the deceased approached the police and identified him.
