Family members of 23-year-old Mustafa Abid Ghulam Silariwala had a harrowing time on Sunday when Sterling Hospital authorities allegedly refused to release his body due to non-payment of dues.

Though the body was released after much drama, the hospital authorities denied the allegations that they had refused to release the body.

Mustafa of Sagwala in Dungarpur in Rajasthan had met with an accident on July 2 and had suffered serious injuries. He was initially admitted to a private hospital in Udaipur but was later shifted to Sterling Hospital on July 17.

However, on July 26, Mustafa succumbed to his injuries at 2:45 am.  Vastrapur police was informed of the case and they arrived at the hospital to collect the body for a post mortem.

However, the hospital staff allegedly did not allow police officials to take the body as the family members had not paid outstanding dues by way of medical expenses.

Instead Dr. Shailesh handed a letter to the police which read:  ‘’I Dr. Shailesh under the authority of Dr. Hemang inform you that this patient has died but until the full payment for his treatment is not made, we cannot allow you to take away his dead body."

An officer of Vastrapur police station confirmed that they were given the letter. “The hospital authorities refused to give the body to us," an officer said.

Family members of the deceased claimed that they had already paid Rs5 lakh out of total expense of Rs5.5 lakh.

“The hospital authorities added the extra amount without our knowledge under the tag of ‘emergency charges’. They then demanded that we pay the extra Rs50,000 or they will not release the body,” a relative of the deceased said.

Sources said the body was later released by the hospital after the media got whiff of the news.

Sterling Hospital authorities, however, had a different story to tell. When contacted, Dr Chandramauli Raval, a senior doctor at Sterling, said the parents had asked for some discount as they were not economically well-off.

“But later they went to the media and told that the hospital did not release the body for non-payment of Rs50,000. The fact is that we have released the body,” said Raval.
