The countdown for much-awaited pleasure boat rides in the Sabarmati has begun, with trial runs being conducted on the west bank of the river near Usmanpura here on Monday.

Barring any unforeseen last-minute hitches, boating service could begin by this weekend or the beginning of next week, assured the officials associated with this project.

Amrapalli, the contractor appointed by Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) to start the boating service, held the trial runs to identify safe stretches of the river for the service. Passers-by looked on with curiosity as motor boats glided on the river. After Patangotsav in January this year, it was for the first time that Amdavadis could see boats floating on Sabarmati.

After assessing water level in the river, Amrapalli officials have decided to start boating between Subhash Bridge and Gandhi bridge.
