Forget love. Stress is in the air in the city this spring. With examinations and budget declaration around the corner, both kids and parents have begun biting their nails.

Financial pressure, in the form of soon to change indirect tax structure and other taxes applicable from March 1, is taking its toll on the entire business community in the state.

At the same time, the impeding final examinations are also putting schoolchildren under tremendous pressure. There has been about 30% rise in cases of stress-induced blood pressure, diabetes and 20% rise in severe psychosomatic illnesses including convulsions and seizures, say medicos in the city.

Take the case of Sunil Shah, a 9-year-old student who was recently admitted to the intensive care unit of a paediatric hospital in the city with severe convulsions. Shah was in ICU for a week till child psychologists and neurologists diagnosed that he was suffering from pseudo-seizures due to mounting examination pressure.

Dr Dewang Parikh, president of Academy of Paediatrics in Ahmedabad, who treated Shah, said, "There is a rise of about 20% in cases of severe psychosomatic illnesses amongst adolescent kids due to approaching exams. Doctors have to acutely examine complaints with associated symptoms for a correct diagnosis and right line of medication."

Similarly, cases of blood pressure, migraine and diabetes amongst adults have registered a 30% rise during this month due to pre-budget pressure. Dr Bansi Saboo, diabetologist and president of Ahmedabad Physicians Association, attributed this rise to mounting pre-budget financial pressure coupled with rising inflation.

Due to rising inflation, the only way to adjust incurring business loss is to manufacture and procure the maximum amount of stock before the new indirect tax structure becomes applicable before March 1.

Dr Jaymin Patel, a family physician said, "To meet manufacturing deadlines before March 1, the entire business community generally comes under severe financial pressure. And with this, cases of stress-induced ailments have registered a sudden jump during this month."

Stress-induced psychosomatic illnesses and physical ailments are being treated by medicos and physiotherapists working together. Dr Param Shukla, a psychotherapist, said, "With allopathic medication, anti-depressants or stimulants are given to patients with a series of intensive counselling therapy to treat such cases amongst teenagers and adults."
