The BJP on Tuesday announced a change of venue for its ‘chintan baithak’, or brainstorming session, for delving into the factors responsible for its poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls. The meeting, earlier scheduled between August 17 and 19 in Mumbai, will now be held at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The dates remain unchanged, though.
BJP’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj did not give any reason for the party altering the venue, but it was reportedly done following objections raised by BJP leaders in Maharashtra.
The state goes to polls in October and a meet in Mumbai to analyse reasons for BJP’s debacle in elections would have led to the kind of publicity the party could do without. “The media would have been full of stories of infighting in the party. If not about infighting, even positive stories would have been only about why BJP lost the polls. That is hardly the kind of publicity to get before going for elections,” said a BJP functionary.
The party felt a systematic and through examination of the election results was required and a chintan baithak was decided upon. Select BJP leaders - the list was under preparation, but it is expected to be fairly broadbased - would attend the meet where inputs from various states and leaders would be taken up for consideration. The party earlier set up a committee of six for collating these inputs. Teams of central leaders were constituted and each was assigned a state. A questionnaire had been given to them for conducting the exercise. These teams were to collect the information from states and come back to report to the central committee.
The meet would examine the report of the committee and discussions are expected to go into every issue raised by party functionaries after the poll debacle.
