The BJP has chalked out a campaign plan that will extensively use the internet, social networking sites and even cellphones to connect to voters and youths in the urban areas of the state. In the rural areas, however, the party will stick to its traditional strategy of mobilising voters through public meetings, rallies, and negotiations with community leaders.

Sources in the BJP said that the party would pay special attention to urban and youths among voters this time. During past poll campaigns, the party could not mobilise this section of voters as completely as it would have liked to do.

How serious the BJP is about using IT and internet for the campaign is evident from the fact that chief minister Narendra Modi has himself asked top leaders of the party and senior workers to use smart phones and latest gadgets even for routine work.

The last meeting of the BJP state executive had no agenda other than the use of internet and social networking sites for the poll campaign. Vadodara BJP chief Bharat Dangar and state IT cell chief Rajika Kacheria had given PowerPoint presentations before senior leaders of the party in the presence of the chief minister.

The sources further said that the daylong executive meet had no discussion on political strategy. "Modi took keen interest in the presentation which explained how information technology and the latest gadgets could be used to great benefit in the elections," a source said.

The chief minister also likes Twitter, Facebook and other social network sites. "At the end of the meeting, Modi asked all the leaders who were present there to tweet to him or post on his Facebook account," another source said.

The party is very serious that it should be possible to contact all leaders and send them messages through email, Facebook and Twitter.

The sources further said a special arrangement had been made at the executive meet to ensure that all leaders had email IDs and accounts on FB and Twitter. "The IT desk was created that day,” a source said.

“The party had made it mandatory for those who attended the meeting that they fill up a form. If a leader did not have an email ID or account on a social network, members of the IT team created accounts for them on the spot and gave them a user ID and password for use,” the sources said.

Modi did not say much about political strategy in his speech at the meeting. Instead, he appealed to all leaders to use smart phones and stay connected with people through the phones.

The party's campaign plan for urban voters would also cover young entrepreneurs, students, and employees of corporate companies.
