After a three-day inaction in the UPA camp over Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj’s special report recommending president’s rule in the state, things suddenly started moving on Thursday with JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda taking the lead in forcing the issue.

The sudden developments have sent jitters in the BJP camp and the party is now mulling yet another strategy to pre-empt the worst from the UPA government by showing the door to speaker KG Bopaiah. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court in its verdict quashing the disqualification of 11 BJP rebels and 5 independent MLAs had come down heavily against the speaker’s conduct in the run up to the disqualification of these MLAs.

The governor’s recommendation is strongly based on the misuse of speaker’s office to ‘subvert’ the sanctity of the trial of strength, justifying the need for the imposition of president’s rule.

A section of the BJP leadership thinks that replacing the speaker would further weaken the need for a strong action such as the imposition of president’s rule.

According to BJP sources, the party is ready to show a little flexibility in its stand by agreeing to sacrifice Bopaiah if that could save the first BJP government in south India even as Deve Gowda held a meeting with the Left party leaders to mobilise wider political consensus for acting on governor’s report. Gowda later met prime minister Manmohan Singh to press for the imposition of president’s rule in the state.

The concerted moves of the Congress-JD(S) and the Left dealt a blow to Yeddyurappa’s confidence and the chief minister, too, upped the ante in his fight against the governor by declaring a state-wide agitation from Friday, demanding the governor to accord permission for conducting legislature session from June 2.

He has threatened to take out rallies from Friday if the assembly is not convened.

Yeddyurappa has also decided to tour the entire state in an open jeep to mobilise public opinion against the governor’s action.

Leaving nothing to chance, the chief minister also made a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi temple on Thursday to ward off the brewing trouble.

A delegation of state Congress leaders led by KPCC president G Parameshwar and leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah will arrive in Delhi on Friday to meet prime minster Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, demanding the dismissal of the BJP government without further delay.
