A businessman was shot dead in cold blood in his shop in Surat on Sunday morning, even as the contract killer was caught within minutes by the people and police. The killer told the police he was paid money by a former partner of the businessmen to eliminate him.

According to information, Gautam Shah, a resident of Ishita Park, Adajan, and owner of Chetan Motors, a car accessories shop at White House near Majura Gate, was shot dead by an unidentified person at around 10.05 am. Shah had just reached his shop some minutes back and was performing puja when the assailant fired one gun shot on him.

The gun shot hit Shah in the heart, even as the assailant tried to flee from them. Unfortunately for the attacker, some youths who were present near the shop and who saw him firing on Shah, removed the keys from the motorcycle (GJ-5-FP-7048) he had arrived on.

The assailant panicked and fled from the scene. However, he was chased by the youths and some other people. The public and a head constable of Athwa police station, who was informed about the firing by an eyewitness, managed to intercept the attacker at Majura Gate and caught him. The gun from which he had fired the shot to kill Shah was also recovered from him.

Shah, who was in the meanwhile, rushed to Mahavir Hospital, was declared dead over arrival at the hospital. Senior police officials rushed to the scene of the killing and conducted investigations. The attacker was identified as Rafiq Farooq Sheikh, a resident of Jamalpur locality in Ahmedabad. During interrogation, Sheikh told the police that he was given a contract by Praful Shah, a former partner of Gautam Shah, to eliminate him.

"Praful Shah owed Rs8 lakh to Gautam Shah, but he did not want to pay the money, which is why he hired Sheikh to get his ex-partner eliminated," police said. The Athwa police have registered a case of murder in connection to the incident. Police said they have initiated efforts to ascertain Sheikh's background, and to trace Praful Shah.
