Bikash behind Shilda, Sarenga attacks: West Bengal DGP

The bloody Maoist attack on Shilda EFR camp earlier this year, in which 24 jawans were killed, was planned and coordinated by an associate of top naxal leader Kishenji, a senior police official said today.

"We have learnt that the February 15 attack was planned and coordinated by Bikash, an associate of Kishenji," West Bengal DGP Bhupinder Singh said.

He is also the one behind the attack on the Sankrail police station in October last year in which two policemen were killed and the officer-in-charge of the outpost abducted, the officer said.

Detailing the chain of events on the fateful day, he said nearly 70 Maoists had arrived in three cars at the Shilda EFR camp and began to attack from various directions.

"The first volley of bullets were fired from the public toilet adjacent to the camp by Maoists armed with AK-47 rifles and small arms. This attack killed the sentry on duty," he said.

According to Singh, it took the Maoists two months to plan the attack and had followed the daily activities at the camp during the period.

Singh said the state police department had recommended the names of three EFR jawans of the Silda camp, including two of the 24 killed, for the Gallantry Award for their role in resisting the attack and killing five Maoists.

The name of Rabi Lochan Moitra, officer-in-charge of the Sarenga police station who was killed by Maoists, has also been recommended, he said.
