Bihar Congress has urged the party high command not to support to RJD-LJP combine in next month's polls for five Rajya Sabha and six Vidhan Parishad seats as that could affect the party's prospects in the assembly polls due later this year.

"We met Sonia Gandhi two days ago to apprise her of our views that the party should not extend support to the RJD-LJP alliance in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha and Vidhan Parishad polls as the move may have an adverse impact on the prospects of the Congress in the assembly polls," state Congress president Anil Sharma told reporters in Patna.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad and LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan needed support of 10 Congress MLAs in the polls in the name of strengthening secular forces in Bihar but they had left Congress during the Lok Sabha last year forgetting the mantra of secularism, he said.

The high command has not taken any decision in this regard yet, he said and expressed hope that the decision would reflect its long term political interests.

The state unit requested the central leadership to contest the biennial polls for Rajya Sabha and Vidhan Parishad to strengthen its base before the assembly polls, he said.

Having a strength of 68 legislators (RJD-56, LJP-12) in the state assembly, RJD-LJP alliance but has decided to put up nominees for two Rajya Sabha seats hoping to rope in the supporter of other opposition MLAs, including the Congress.

With each prospective winner of a Rajya Sabha seat requiring 41 votes, the RJD will easily get one candidate elected on its own, but the second candidate will need votes from other parties.

Neither Prasad nor Paswan has made any announcement on the candidature issue for the two Rajya Sabha seats or its electoral strategy in view of shortfall of numbers.
