The BJP and the Congress are leaving no stone unturned to establish their hold over the forthcoming Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) elections scheduled to be held on September 14.

As many as 25 elected executive members of the BCG will vote for the seven posts of the council namely, chairman, vice-chairman, finance chairman, rules chairman, enroll chairman, executive and GLH chairman. Numerically, it seems like the ruling BJP will have the upper hand in the election since of the 25 elected members of the BCG, 14 belong to the BJP while only eight are from the Congress. The remaining three are
independent members.

For the post of chairman, advocate Anil Kella is pitted against JR Gandhi from Surat. A source said that the elections for the post of chairman holds significance as both Anil Kella and JR Gandhi have the backing of the BJP.

While talking to DNA, Anil Kella agreed to the same and said, "Election result for the post of chairman post will be important since both my rival and I have the backing of BJP leaders."

Kella also said that in a couple of days the state BJP vice-president  Zevar Chavda would hold a meeting of BJP executive members of BCG to chalk out further course of action.
On the other hand, contending for the post of vice-chairman would be advocate Dilip Patel from Rajkot and advocate Gopinath Amin from Ahmedabad.

Elaborating on the elections, Kella said there are more than 60,000 advocates on BCG roll, of which 25 are elected as members of BCG at the interval of every five years. These members then elect seven members for various important posts of the BCG. Vijay Patel is the current chairman of the BCG.

The BCG is an autonomous statutory body constituted under Advocates Act, 1961, possessing varied powers, functions and duties. The first elected body of the BCG came into existence on December 16, 1961. At that time, there were only 1,184 advocates on the roll of the state bar council. The advocate general is always the ex officio member of the BCG.
