The entire Electronic City, housing 157 Indian and foreign IT companies and employing 70,000 employees, will get security cover from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to protect them from terror attacks. The IT nerve centre is the first cluster of private companies in India to get a security cover from the CISF.

“This (Electronic City) is the first project we will finish, after which we will attend to other private companies that are also on the terror radar. We were approached by the Electronic City Industries Association (ELCIA) long ago. The procedure for the security cover has already started and we are working on the number of personnel required,” a CISF spokesperson told DNA.

The CISF has planned to extend the cover to the entire 45-acre west wing of the Electronic City from January 29 where major IT firms like Infosys, Hewlett Packard and Wipro are housed. This wing will be guarded by 78 heavily-armed CISF men.

“We have gone all out in providing special rapid action force that includes the armed component for Infosys,” the spokesperson said.

Till the entire Electronic City gets the security cover, the 190-acre east wing would be monitored only in the event of an emergency.
The CISF security, till last year, was mainly restricted to Infosys, the first private firm in India to get a CISF cover.

Intelligence agencies had sounded an alert about Infosys being on the terror radar after the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.

According to Prakash Rao, ELCIA chief executive officer, a vulnerability study conducted by the CISF in 2006 found that the Electronic City faced a terror threat due to the presence of multinational firms from US and UK. The study found that there was an easy access to the place from the surrounding villages.

Sources said the costs of sustaining the CISF detachment in Electronic City will be borne by 20 major companies including WIPRO, Siemens, Hewlett Packard and IBM, who have agreed to pay the expenses.

Infosys spends a whopping Rs1 lakh daily to maintain the present detachment protecting the company.

“Wipro was part of the CISF request initiation team. The increased peripheral security at our Electronic City campus will be a good move. It will increase the security measures in the area,” a Wipro spokesperson said.
