Bangalore has stamped his class with the acclaim of being the country’s IT capital. Experts, however, feel that Bangalore has a greater prospect in the field of animation which is beyond what IT has achieved so far.

“The presence of HAL, IISc and IIM-B has helped in the rapid growth of the animation industry. Bangalore has the potential to be creative capital of the country,” according to Biren Ghose, country head, Technocolor India.

The standard of India’s animation industry is world class, says Ashish Kulkarni, chief executive officer (CEO), Reliance BigAnimation Ltd. “One of our latest productions in animation has matched international standards. Apart from that, we are having collaborating with international leaders in the industry. It shows what we are capable of,” says Kulkarni. However, experts feel that government can do a lot better to promote the industry.

“The amount of support given to this industry may it be financial, policy related or others, is non-existing. In the Centre level, there are at least attempts to help, but the state government is not even concerned. The reason for all the achievements of this industry is purely due to private financing,” says Ghose.

In the South Asian market, India is considered the leader in providing animation services. Competitors like Singapore, China and Malaysia are not far behind in the race. “The governments in these countries are proactive. They do realise the prominence of industry and how it can bring great benefits to the country. In China, each province has animation parks similar to our sophisticated IT parks,” says Anand Gurani, CEO, Animation Xpress.

“Most of the television channels run American and Japanese animated movies, whereas our animated movies are as good as them. So having a domestic market is very important,” says Kulkarni.

Another demand put forth is the setting up of a premier institute to train professionals and create a talented workforce which would give the industry an edge in the world market.
