'Avatar' tightens its grip on UK box office

The 3D space extravaganza has so far taken 65 million pounds in its seven-week British run, six of which have been at No.1.

Avatar, now the biggest-grossing movie ever, extended its run at the top of the British box office over the weekend, taking another 4.8 million pounds, Screen International said on Tuesday.  

The 3D space extravaganza has so far taken 65 million pounds in its seven-week British run, six of which have been at No.1.      

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which briefly de-throned Avatar for a week late last year, was up a place to second, just above Mel Gibson as a cop investigating the death of his daughter in Edge of Darkness which made its debut at three.                                           

Guy Ritchie's remake of  Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, slipped two spots to four, while Meryl Streep at the apex of a love triangle in "It's Complicated" was unchanged at five.                                           

George Clooney as a corporate frequent flyer facing a travel clampdown in Up in the Air was down two at six. 

The re-release of Disney's Toy Story 2 slipped a place to seven, just above The Book of Eli, at eight, also down one, with Denzel Washington as a man on a mission in post-apocalyptic America.                                           

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire came in at nine with the story of an illiterate teen in Harlem trying to turn her life around.                                           

Making up the top 10 was vampire movie Daybreakers, with Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, which was down two places.
