Calling atrocities against women a social crime, a Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women said such incidents have reached "sickening heights" in the country and regretted they are only increasing day by day.

The panel also asked the national and state women commissions to fulfill their duties with dedication and care.

"Atrocities against women have reached sickening heights in India and are only increasing day by day without any respite," the Committee said in its report which was tabled in both the Houses of Parliament today.

"It(crimes against women) disrupts the entire social fabric and have far reaching consequences affecting future generations," the report of the Committee headed by Chandresh Kumari said.

The panel expressed its dismay over the post of chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCM) being kept vacant for four months from April this year.

"The committee are of the considered view that any delay in filling up the key posts in any organization will lead to its underperformance and defeat the very purpose of having such an institution," the report said.

Asking the government to ensure that NCM is always headed by persons of eminence and committed to the cause of women with professional expertise, the Committee said these posts should not be left vacant under any circumstances.

On delays in implementation of recommendations and suggestions given by NCM, the Committee said the government should adhere to the time-frame, probably two years, in effecting these from the date of initial submission.

It also asked the Women and Child Development Ministry to evolve a streamlined approach in this regard. "The Ministry should apprise NCM once in every six months the status of implementation of these recommendations."
