Resident doctors of Civil Hospital went an indefinite strike from Saturday in protest against the assault on a fellow doctor by the relatives of a patient who died during the treatment.

The incident of assault occurred late on Friday night at around 11:30 pm. Relatives of Shehnaz Mansoori, a 32-year-old patient who had died during treatment that night, beat up Dr Nitin Chaudhary whom they blamed for the her death.

Dr Chaudhary informed the other resident doctors of the hospital about the incident, after which an FIR was filed at Shahibaug police station. At 2.30 am on Saturday, the resident doctors declared an indefinite strike and called for a strike in other hospitals as well. Incidentally, the doctors have not yet given notice about the strike to the hospital authorities. The police have arrested two relatives who had allegedly battered Dr Chaudhary.

Cross-complaints have also been filed by the patient's relatives at the Shahibaug police station.

"Dr Nitin Chaudhary, a resident doctor at Civil Hospital, was beaten up by two relatives of the patient when he went to inform them about the death, during treatment of Shehnazbanu Mansuri,"said sources. The doctors have lodged a case of assault and coercion against Shehnaz's relatives, accusing them of attacking a doctor on duty. In the cross-complaint, the relatives have accused the doctor of abusing them verbally. The Shahibaug police have started further investigation and, according to sources, may take steps to arrest Dr Chaudhary soon. The sources in the police said that Shehnaz was suffering from a disease of intestine. She had been admitted in the surgical ward of the Civil Hospital on February 19.

"She was successfully operated upon by the doctors a few days back and was feeling quite well. She was to be taken for sonography at 10 pm on Friday night," the sources said. However, she became very ill before she could be taken for sonography and was immediately rushed to the trauma ward. As she was unable to breathe properly, a tube was inserted though her mouth to facilitate breathing.

Dr Chaudhary had given her an injection to support her heart and put her on ventilator support for breathing. But the relatives of the patient have a completely different story. They have alleged that the doctors' had slapped the woman during sonography and that is why her condition had deteriorated.

Investigating officer MB Nisharga said they have registered complaints of both parties. "We have also arrested two relatives of the patient, Ajit Ahmed Mansuri and Mohammad Wasim Ansari," he said.
