Veteran Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela on Friday termed the announcement of disbursement of arrears to the state government employees an eyewash. He said it had been done keeping the elections in mind.

The former chief minister, who is also the head of the Congress election campaign committee, said that industrial growth rate and agricultural produce except cotton had reduced in the state in the 10 years of  Modi rule.

Addressing the media, Vaghela said: "This is not development but lip service about development. This announcement of arrears is not a special package. It was the right of the government employees and the Modi government has been compelled to give it after the High Court order."

He said, "In fact, the state government has given the arrears late by six months after the announcement of the same by the Central government, and because of this, the employees have suffered a loss of interest amount of Rs104 crore at the rate of 8% interest in provident fund."

Talking about the reduction in industrial growth rate and agricultural produce, he said, "The state had an average industrial growth rate of 14-16 per cent before Modi government came to power and it had also gone up to 18-19 per cent, but during Modi regime it is merely 10.10 per cent. Agricultural sowing except cotton has declined."

He indicated that the district-level Congress units will be protesting against the CM's Sadbhavna fast in each district.
Mahagujarat Janata Party president Gordhan Zadaphia said "the chief minister is serving the state government employee with sweets in terms of arrears in one hand and hunter for looting their self respect in the other.”
