The controversy surrounding the purported tapping of some sensitive phones in the capital by the Army took a murky turn on Monday with the Army blaming a retired Lt General and some disgruntled serving officers of the Military Intelligence for planting story in the media even as the Defence Ministry has ordered a probe into the matter.

Army sources took the unusual step of telling the media that Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh, who was former chief of the Defence Intelligence Agency, along with "some disgruntled serving officers of the Military Intelligence, against whom disciplinary and administrative actions in in the pipeline, has worked out this fictitious story".

"The Army strongly denies this and takes strong exception to such salacious and malafide stroes, come out as news," the sources said.

When contacted, Singh refuted the charge that he was planting stories in the media and said he will take legal action against the people accusing him of any wrongdoing.
